Mr and Mrs Matsemela’s Traditional Wedding

Umabo Ceremony by the Matsemela’s

Umabo is a ceremony when the bride is officially welcomed by the groom’s family into their home. The bride’s family accompanies the bride with gifts to the groom’s family such as blankets, beaded mats (incasi) and anything the groom’s family specifies on their gift list. The bride must specifically buy a kist which stores her belongings, a new bed and linen for the couple as a gift. It’s a symbol that she’s moving in and ready to start her own family. During umabo, the groom must accept the gift by sleeping on the bed that makoti has prepared for him.
